Canada shooting: suspect dead after shooting in parliament building

Canada's capital was jolted on Wednesday by the fatal shooting of a soldier and an attack on the parliament building in which gunshots were fired outside a room where Prime Minister Stephen Harper was speaking.

The suspected gunman was shot dead inside the parliament building but it was not clear if he was acting alone.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper later condemned the "despicable attack" on Canada's parliament.

Renee Zellweger hits back at furore over new-look face, says she is "healthier, happier"

American actress Renee Zellweger hit back on Wednesday at the online furore triggered by her new-look face, saying she was simply older and happier.

The 45-year-old Oscar-winnersparked a global firestorm of online comments after she appeared at a Hollywood women's awards show Monday.

"I'm glad folks think I look different! I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows," Zellweger said, calling the storm about her appearance "silly."

Early Apple computer sells for $1.15 million at auction

One of the few remaining examples of Apple Inc's first pre-assembled computer, Apple-1, sold for US$905,000 (S$1.15 million) at an auction in New York on Wednesday, far outstripping expectations.

The relic, which sparked a revolution in home computing, is thought to be one of the first batch of 50 Apple-1 machines assembled by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Steve Job's family garage in Los Altos, California in the summer of 1976.

The buyer was The Henry Ford Organisation, which plans to display the computer in its museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Football: Ronaldo leads masterclass as Real rout Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield

Cristiano Ronaldo inspired a Real Madrid masterclass and closed in on the Champions League goalscoring record as the holders thrashed Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Wednesday, Oct 22, 2014.

His opening goal took him to within one of Champions League record goalscorer Raul's total of 71.

Real's victory leaves the 10-time European champions top of Group B with maximum points from their three fixtures, while Liverpool head to the Bernabeu for the rematch on November 4 knowing their hopes of progressing to the last 16 are hanging by a slender thread after successive defeats.

UK State Visit: Singapore, UK to renew science research tie-up

Singapore and Britain will renew a partnership in scientific research first formalised in 2004, President Tony Tan Keng Yam announced in London on Wednesday.

The tie-up, known as the United Kingdom-Singapore Innovation and Research Partnership, entails students and researchers from both countries going on exchange programmes, and sharing research and development activities and infrastructure.

There will also be joint funding of research.
