A splash of colour

Getting a faceful of coloured water was all part of the fun at Holi celebrations in Kolkata yesterday.

Holi marks the arrival of spring in the Hindu calendar, and takes place over two days. It is also known as the Festival of Colour.

On the morning of the second day, revellers chase friends, family members and even strangers, smearing them with coloured powder and drenching them with water. Everyone is fair game.

In the evening, after a day of fun, revellers bathe, don clean clothes and visit their friends and family.

People take part in Holi all around the world, but the festival is celebrated the most in parts of India and Nepal.
