The Big Story: New video series The Pro, and ST's upcoming National Day Rally coverage

SINGAPORE - Catch up with the hottest topics on The Straits Times' new weekday talk show.

The Big Story, broadcast every weekday at 5.30pm on Facebook and YouTube, has reporters and senior editors discussing the top stories of the day, in the heart of the newsroom.

In Friday's (Aug 16) episode, technology correspondent Chong Koh Ping will talk about what causes lithium-ion batteries to explode. These batteries are found in personal mobility devices, phones, and laptops. She will also discuss the precautions one should take when charging the batteries.

Following that, assistant sports editor Rohit Brijnath will share more about a new video series, The Pro, which follows the journey of six professional athletes, and why it is easier to turn professional in some sports, such as swimming and table tennis, compared to others. The video series will premiere on Aug 17 on

Lastly, political correspondent Rachel Au-Yong will share about the paper's planned coverage of the upcoming National Day Rally on Sunday, which will include videos on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's speech.

Topics covered in previous episodes include gout striking younger men and what one can do to lower the risks of this painful condition; the comments made by Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam that violent protests will push Hong Kong down a "path of no return", and how protests disrupted flights at the city's airport; carpooling services that will need licences under a new regulatory framework; and the Singaporean kayaker's body found in Terengganu.
