Competition is heating up for the new game genre, with big developers such as Electronic Arts jumping in on the action

The hottest video-gaming trend of the year is shaping up to be a battle royale - literally, as a slew of new games battle it out for supremacy in the battle royale genre.

The game format, which pits up to 100 players against one another in a free-for-all arena with only one victor, has been called "the hottest gaming genre" of the year by gaming consultancy Newzoo.
