Samsung Galaxy TabPro S
The highlight of Samsung's announcements at CES 2106 was the hybrid tablet-computer device, the Galaxy TabPro S.
Unlike other Samsung tablets that ship with Android, the TabPro S will run Windows 10 - thus positioning it as a rival to Microsoft's Surface Pro 4. It also marks Samsung's re-entry to the Windows market since withdrawing its laptops from Singapore in 2014.
The 12-inch device, which comes with a detachable keyboard, is equipped with a dual-core Intel Core M processor and 4GB of RAM. It will be available in 128GB and 256GB models, and will have both Wi-Fi and LTE options. At 6.3mm thick, the Super Amoled screen-device is 26 per cent thinner than the Surface Pro 4, and 9 per cent thinner than the iPad Pro.
While there is no official word on its Singapore availability, the fact that the Galaxy TabPro S is listed under Samsung's Tablet division means there is a high chance of it going on sale here.
eGeeTouch Smart Locks
eGeeTouch unveiled two new smart locks at CES - the Smart NFC-Fingerprint Luggage Lock and the Smart Travel Padlock.
Both operate wirelessly using Near Field Technology (NFC). Unlike traditional combination or lock-and-key solutions, all a user has to do with an eGeeTouch Smart Lock is to tap a paired NFC tag or NFC-enabled phone on the lock to operate it.
The smart padlocks can also keep a record of when and where access was made, and who accessed it.
The Smart NFC-Fingerprint Luggage Lock, which can be embedded into a suitcase, can also be locked and unlocked via fingerprint recognition.
4K + HDR TVs fromSony, LG and Samsung
LG has further improved its organic light-emitting diode (Oled) TV sets. While these are more pricey than the usual LED models, they also produce deeper blacks and richer colours. At CES, LG showed its latest Signature Oled TV, which is just 2.57mm thick, or about as thick as four credit cards stacked together.
LG also said it is working with Netflix to provide prepaid access to the Netflix video streaming service.
Samsung continues to push LED TVs that use quantum dot technology to compete with LG's Oled TV sets. This year's model offers richer contrast and better colours. The company is also positioning the TV as a smart home hub which lets you control compatible connected devices via the Samsung SmartThings platform.
As for Sony, it was happy to showcase its new Slim Backlight TV that uses a backlighting structure to enhance the quality of video images.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet
Lenovo's new ThinkPad X1 Tablet is one of the most innovative consumer tablets on the market right now.
The 12-inch device is compatible with various modules that can be snapped on to the tablet's bottom edge. The basic model ships with three of these modules: a Presenter Module that turns the tablet into a projector, a three-dimensional (3D) Imaging Module that provides 3D scanning functionality, and a Productivity Module that adds five hours of battery life and additional connectivity options such as USB 3.0 and HDMI ports.
The tablet itself comes with an Intel Core M7 vPro processor, a 2,160 by 1,440-pixel in-plane switching display, up to 1TB of memory and a nano SIM card slot.
