Custom in-ear monitors can cost $400 to more than $2,000, but some audiophiles say the investment is worth it

Audiophile Aaron Ong, 30, has probably paid more for earphones than what some people have paid for their entire music collection.

He owns three custom-made in-ear monitors (IEMs), each individually crafted to fit his ears and costing more than $2,000.
