When Chris Wilder was working his way up from managing in Sunday league football, he took the occasional call from Alex Ferguson. "It was a huge boost, being helped along the way by the man running one of the most iconic clubs in the world," Wilder reminisces. "He called quite a few young British managers."

A call would have been unlikely this weekend. Wilder's club, Sheffield United, play Manchester United tonight.
