SINGAPORE - The draw for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global has been set, with world No. 1 Simona Halep and second-ranked Garbine Muguruza leading the Red and White groups respectively.
The draw ceremony, conducted on Friday (Oct 20) at the Marina Bay Sands Ballroom, sees top seed Halep of Romania joined by Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who returns to Singapore after failing to qualify for the past two editions of the season-ending tournament.
Also in the Red Group are first-time singles qualifier Caroline Garcia on France, who is entering the US$7 million (S$9.5 million) event on an 11-match winning streak, and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who has won a season-high five titles.
In the other group, Spaniard Muguruza will face world No. 3 Karolina Pliskova, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams.
Williams is the only woman among the eight who has won the season-ending tournament, having won the title in 2008.
Said the American: "Maybe I can channel some of those memories to play well here, we've got an amazing field this is the best the tournament has ever been run, the excitement level is high, we get to dress up, I'm loving it."
The Oct 22-29 tournament will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Red Group: Halep, Svitolina, Wozniacki, Garcia.
White Group: Muguruza, Williams, Pliskova, Ostapenko.
