PARIS (AFP) - Reaction to Rafael Nadal's French Open withdrawal on Friday due to a left wrist injury:

"@rolandgarros that is just so sad - sorry Rafa - get well fast please!!!" - Tennis legend Martina Navratilova on Twitter

"Poor Rafa. I think we can all agree that wrist injuries suck." - British player Laura Robson who has battled wrist injuries for the last two years

"A wrist injury, it's kind of weird, I don't think he's ever had that before. It's a bummer for the tournament. Tennis is a physical sport. It takes its toll on everyone's bodies, for sure." - America's John Isner after making the last-16 on Friday

"I have a lot of respect for him, and I feel sorry. If he's decided to stop, it must be serious. It can't be something small. It's a big loss for the tournament, and I hope he will recover. That's the most important. I hope he will recover quickly and come back to the circuit." - French player Richard Gasquet, a close friend of Nadal

"I think he could have played tomorrow. We have heard him. He couldn't compete at this level all the way to the end. If he was going to do so, he was going to take the biggest risk of snapping his tendon. As much as he wanted to go on court, and I know he wanted to try tomorrow, his doctor just told him, Don't do it. Rafa is a very passionate man. He plays with passion. That's why people love him all around the world. So it is a painful decision for him to withdraw." - French Open director Guy Forget

"Brutal news @RafaelNadal has had a great resurgence as of late huge loss to this event and to tennis, get well." - Paul Annacone, former coach of Roger Federer and Pete Sampras, on Twitter
