Spain's Muguruza advanced to a meeting with US wildcard Kayla Day, who ousted Australian Open semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
Day, at 17 the youngest woman in the main draw, toppled the 32nd-seeded Lucic-Baroni who at 35 was the third-oldest player in the field behind Venus Williams and Francesca Schiavone, both 36.
