PARIS (AFP) - Australian 29th seed Nick Kyrgios was handed a free pass into the French Open third round on Wednesday when scheduled opponent Kyle Edmunds withdrew with a stomach injury.

"Unfortunately I have had to withdraw from my second round match here at Roland Garros due to an abdominal injury," Edmunds wrote on Twitter.

"On doctors advice and to avoid making the injury worse I have withdrawn to recover and prepare for the grass."

The match was scheduled for Thursday but Kyrgios will now have more time to prepare for a third-round clash with either third seed Andy Murray or Portugal's Joao Sousa.
