Every day an athlete retires, packs his boots or folds her leotard, and what this feels like we'll never understand. At 31, we'll never know what it's like to give up the craft that made us. At 31, we'll rarely be undone by a failing body. At 31, we'll never have to accept that our best body of work is possibly behind us.
But at 31, that's where Andy Murray is. Yesterday he said he is done with tennis and of course he cried.
