Old school Federer rests as new-wave tennis tries its hand

In Stephen Tignor's fine book, High Strung, there is a brilliantly reported description of Bjorn Borg at the US Open in 1981. Defeated in a fourth final in New York, he shakes hands with John McEnroe and walks off court. He does not wait for the speeches, answers no questions, showers and drives away.

Writes Tignor: "He would never play another Grand Slam match."
