Player council head wants shorter matches

Association of Tennis Professionals player council president and doubles specialist Eric Butorac has concluded that tennis must consider shortening matches, in a bid to engage with a younger fanbase and avoid losing television viewers.

The average length of men's matches through the first six days at Flushing Meadows this year was 2hr 31min. That is eight minutes longer than the overall average from last year.

Australia's bad boys of tennis Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic bowed out of the US Open in typical controversy, with Kyrgios being accused of not fighting hard enough and Tomic being fined for firing lewd comments at a heckler.

But both have been named in the Davis Cup squad for the World Group play-off against Slovakia this month.
