An American backhand went wide, a Ukrainian fell to the floor, confetti rained. The WTA Finals concluded and they also finished. This travelling caravan of talent has pulled up its pegs. This procession of women who are accomplished, imperfect, driven, disciplined, unapologetic and plain hate losing, will not return to Singapore any more. Octobers won't be the same.

Wimbledon has been around since Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, yet we have had only five Octobers of grunts and thwacks. Still it has been a fine music. Anyway when a tournament stays, even for such a short while, it infiltrates your life.
