Singapore youth paddler Yin Jing Yuan has qualified for this year's Youth Olympic Games, joining female national team-mate Yee Herng Hwee in earning a ticket to the Aug 16-28 event in Nanjing, China.
The 17-year-old beat Lebanon's Mohamad Hamie 11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 to win his semi-final in the third stage of the Asia Continental Qualification in Bangkok. He also beat Tola Soeung of Cambodia in the quarter-finals, sweeping his opponent aside 11-7, 11-5, 12-10, 11-3.
The victories mean Jing Yuan clinches one of the four qualifying spots available at the tournament.
Each National Olympic Committee is allowed to field only one athlete in the boys' and girls' singles event. The paddlers' selection for the quadrennial Games is subject to the approval of the Singapore National Olympic Council. Six have been given the nod so far - two shooters, one taekwondo exponent and three sailors.
