SINGAPORE swimmer Tao Li has reached the semi-finals of the women's 50m butterfly at the Fina World Championships in Barcelona.

The 23-year-old clocked 26.48sec - shy of her national record of 26.10 - in Friday's heat to rank 13th out of 61 entrants.

It was a less fruitful outing, however for 18-year-old Joseph Schooling, who narrowly failed to make the last-16 cut in the men's 100m fly.

The Florida-based swimmer's time of 52.56 saw him finish 17th out of 60 swimmers.

Tao's semi-final will take place early Saturday morning (Singapore time).
