SINGAPORE - More than 20,000 running enthusiasts have pencilled the Dec 3 Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) into their calendars, after a considerable number took early advantage of discounted rates.

The number of registered runners at this stage is double that at the same time last year. An estimated 46,000 signed up for the annual marquee run.

The Super Early Bird rates ended on May 7. Early bird rates, with up to $15 discounts off entry fees, are still available until June 30.

Race organisers Ironman lifted the cap off of the Super Early Bird and Early Bird rates this year.

Said Ironman Asia managing director Geoff Meyer: "We are constantly looking to improve and beyond bringing back waved starts for the consolidated (half marathon) and (full marathon) flag off which has been used to much success at global marathons to ensure a smooth run, we will also look at other amenities enhancements to give runners the best possible marathon experience."

Similar to last year, the half and full marathon and Ekiden race will flag off at Orchard Road, while the 10km run will start from Esplanade Drive. All events will finish at the Padang.

The SCSM is gunning to become a World Marathon Major, joining an elite group that includes fabled events like the Boston, London and Berlin marathons.
