Albirex Niigata regained their seven-point lead over Tampines Rovers (28 points) at the top of the S-League football standings, after edging out fourth-placed Hougang United 2-1 away last night.

Second-half goals by Atsushi Kawata and Tatsuro Inui gave them full points after Jozef Kaplan put the Cheetahs ahead.

In the other game, Warriors FC beat Geylang International 2-0 at home with a brace by Nicola Rak.


Four-year ban for Russian swimmer

MOSCOW • Russian Olympic swimmer Yana Martynova has been banned for four years for taking a banned substance, the country's anti-doping agency said.

She was provisionally suspended in July 2015 after testing positive for the anabolic agent ostarine.

Bekele unhappy over 'unfair' Rio exclusion

ADDIS ABABA • Ethiopian running great Kenenisa Bekele has railed against his "unfair" exclusion from the country's marathon team for the Rio Olympics, adding to the growing discontent at the athletics federation's management.

The 34-year-old, a triple Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion over 5,000 and 10,000m, hoped to revive his Olympic career in August over the longer distance.

Mkhitaryan eyeing role with Red Devils

LONDON • Henrikh Mkhitaryan's agent has revealed the Borussia Dortmund midfielder would welcome a move to English football club Manchester United, although the German club are unwilling to allow him to leave.

Mkhitaryan has one year of his current deal remaining - having joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.

Selection trials for U-14 girls' team

Selection trials for next year's U-14 girls' national team will take place on June 20, 22 and 24 at Serangoon Stadium from 5pm-7pm. The trials are open only to Singapore citizens born between Jan 1, 2003 and Dec 31, 2005. Participants are only required to attend a single trial session.

Selected players will represent Singapore at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Girls Regional Championship next June.
