Sun upsets Li, will face Nehwal in final

SYDNEY • Unseeded Chinese shuttler Sun Yu upset compatriot Li Xuerui, the Olympic champion and third seed, 21-18, 21-19 in the Australian Open women's singles semi-finals.

In today's final, she will meet India's Saina Nehwal, who took out fourth-seeded Chinese Wang Yihan 21-8, 21-12.

The men's singles final is an all-unseeded affair after a series of upsets. Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghus beat K. Srikanth of India 22-20, 21-13 and will play Jeon Hyeok Jin. The South Korean outlasted Indonesia's Anthony Ginting 21-19, 16-21, 21-19.

Four-year Sevilla deal for Kiyotake

TOKYO • Japan midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake vowed yesterday to nail down a first-team place at Spanish football side Sevilla after agreeing a four-year deal with the Europa League champions.

Berger adds flavour to St Jude Classic

LOS ANGELES • Daniel Berger fired six birdies in a six-under 64 on Friday to grab a three-stroke lead midway through the US PGA Tour St Jude Classic, the last tune-up before next week's US Open.

The 23-year-old's 131 total put him three shots in front of Tom Hoge, the overnight co-leader who birdied his last two holes to cap a 69 for sole possession of second place on 134.

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH (Netherlands•) • Luxembourg's Gilles Muller won the battle of aces against big-hitting Croat Ivo Karlovic to reach the ' s-Hertogenbosch ATP final yesterday.

Muller slammed down 22 aces to 21 by the towering Karlovic, for a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) win at the grass-court tennis tournament.

Another death rocks Nigerian football

LAGOS • Shaibu Amodu, 58, who had nine spells as coach of the Nigeria national football team, died suddenly yesterday.

The death of the Nigeria Football Federation's technical director came just days after that of former national team captain and coach Stephen Keshi on Tuesday from a suspected heart attack.
