Sng qualifies for Asian meet in Qatar

National high jumper Michelle Sng posted 1.70m at the Singapore Athletics Track and Field Series 1 yesterday, meeting the qualifying mark for the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.

The Asian meet will be held from Feb 19-21 in Qatar.

Sng, who will be 29 this year, leapt 1.84m last year to set the national record.

Bilbao halt Eibar's La Liga table climb

MADRID • Eibar missed a chance to climb above Celta Vigo into fifth place in the Spanish Primera Liga when they were beaten 5-2 at Athletic Bilbao yesterday.

Eibar have one of the cheapest squads in Spain's top football division yet the tiny club have outshone wealthier rivals and ended the first half of the season in the European qualification places.

On Saturday, Barcelona leapfrogged Atletico Madrid, who faced Sevilla yesterday, to go top of La Liga after they secured a 2-1 victory against Malaga.


Nowitzki retires from international game

BERLIN • Dallas Mavericks' German star Dirk Nowitzki yesterday announced his retirement from international basketball.

"The last match at Euro 2015 was my last match for Germany," the 37-year-old, who was his nation's flag bearer at the 2008 Olympics, said.

On that occasion in Berlin on Sept 10, Germany lost 76-77 to Spain, a loss which knocked them out of the competition.
