Slingers scare away Vampires to stay top

BANGKOK • The Singapore Slingers beat Thailand's Mono Vampires 97-69 at the Sripatum University yesterday.

American centre Justin Howard was the star performer with 26 points and 16 rebounds, as the Slingers remained top of the Asean Basketball League with a 14-3 record .

They host second-placed Malaysia Dragons at the OCBC Arena on Sunday at 4pm.

All Singaporeans out of Thailand Masters

BANGKOK • Singaporean interest in badminton's Thailand Masters ended in the second round last night.

Mixed doubles pair Terry Hee and Tan Wei Han lost 16-21, 13-21 to home veterans Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam, while Chayut Triyachart and his Thai partner Songphon Anugritayawon went down 17-21, 11-21 to Chinese fifth seeds Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in the men's doubles.

German Wehrlein to drive for Manor in F1

BERLIN • German Touring Car (DTM) champion Pascal Wehrlein will race for British Formula One team Manor this season, the German media reported him as saying yesterday.

The 21-year-old German became the youngest DTM champion last year when he won the title with Mercedes. He was a reserve driver for world champions Mercedes in Formula One last season.


Injured forearm puts Sharapova out again

DOHA • Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Qatar Open tournament to be held later this month owing to a left forearm injury, the organisers announced yesterday.

The world No. 6 tennis star pulled out of her intended season opener, the Brisbane International, for the same reason.
