Sports world: Russia to challenge Paralympics ban

Russia to challenge Paralympics ban

MOSCOW • Russia will appeal in the Swiss Federal Court tomorrow against the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS') decision to uphold a blanket ban on its athletes from competing in next month's Rio Paralympics.

Earlier this week, the CAS rejected a Russian Paralympic Committee appeal against the suspension that was handed out by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) because of a state-sponsored sports doping programme.

The decision means at least 260 competitors from Russia are now set to miss the Sept 7-18 Paralympics.

Hat-trick the basis of Bayern's 6-0 victory

MUNICH • Polish footballer Robert Lewandowski's hat-trick helped give coach Carlo Ancelotti a flying start to his first Bundesliga campaign as Bayern Munich cruised to an easy 6-0 win over Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena on Friday.

Xabi Alonso, Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribery were the other scorers on the night.

Pellegrini to manage Hebei China Fortune

BEIJING • Chinese Super League football club Hebei China Fortune have appointed former Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager, Chinese and British media reported yesterday.

The 62-year-old Chilean, who won the English Premier League and two League Cups with City after taking over in 2013, joins big-name coaches Sven-Goran Eriksson of Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou Evergrande's Luis Felipe Scolari in China.

Hebei, who are currently fifth in the Chinese Super League standings, face leaders Guangzhou on Sept 10.
