Ronaldo trumps Messi in season earnings

PARIS • Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was the best-paid footballer in the 2016-17 season, with €87.5 million (S$132.6 million), ahead of Lionel Messi (€76.5 million), according to France Football.

Neymar, Messi's Brazilian team-mate at Barcelona, is third with €55.5 million, while Manchester United's Jose Mourinho is the best-paid coach, with income of €28 million.

Injured Murray in doubt for Davis Cup

LONDON • Tennis' world No. 1 Andy Murray is likely to miss Britain's Davis Cup quarter-final trip to France next week due to an elbow injury, his brother Jamie Murray has said.

Murray, who pulled out of the ongoing Miami Masters after sustaining an elbow problem in training, is expected to be left out of the British squad, which will be announced today.

Smith regrets not taking sabbatical

WELLINGTON • All Blacks scrum-half Aaron Smith has said he should have taken time away from rugby, as he battled with the embarrassing fallout from a tryst with a woman in an airport toilet which came to light last October.

The 28-year-old returned to the team in November but has been off his best and said the controversy had taken its toll on and off the field.
