Mandani stars in Slingers' victory

Asean heritage import and Filipino point guard AJ Mandani posted a game-high 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead the Singapore Slingers to a 94-76 win over the Saigon Heat yesterday at the OCBC Arena.

The Slingers' world imports also impressed with American centre Christien Charles notching 24 points and a whopping 29 rebounds while compatriot Xavier Alexander chipped in with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The victory is the Slingers' ninth in 16 games this season as they remain fifth in the nine-team Asean Basketball League, one place ahead of the Heat who slipped to 7-8.


Vietnam could host F1 race by 2020

LONDON • A Formula One race in Vietnam could be on the calendar by 2020 with a street race in Hanoi likely, revealed ex-boss Bernie Ecclestone.

The billionaire Briton said the Vietnamese government was willing to pay a significant amount to promote the South-east Asian country by hosting a Grand Prix.

The Malaysian GP dropped off the calendar after last year, leaving Singapore, whose race is from Sept 14-16, as the region's sole F1 event.

Svitolina bags 11th career title in Dubai

DUBAI • Elina Svitolina won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Daria Kasatkina.

The 23-year-old Ukrainian, ranked fourth in the world, bagged her 11th career title after the 70-minute rout of the world No. 24 Russian.

She joins former world No. 1s Justine Henin and Venus Williams as back-to-back Dubai title winners.

Tough for Ohtani in MLB training debut

LOS ANGELES • Japanese two-way phenomenon Shohei Ohtani had a rough outing in his spring training debut for Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, giving up a home run and two runs in less than two innings.

The 23-year-old right hander struck out two, walked one and threw 31 pitches over 1 1/3 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers in Tempe, Arizona.

Ohtani, who is the first player in nearly 100 years to attempt to play in the major leagues as a pitcher and hitter, did not bat.
