Lichtsteiner signs for Arsenal on free transfer
LONDON • Arsenal have signed Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner from Italian champions Juventus on a free transfer, the Premier League football club announced yesterday.
The 34-year-old made more than 250 appearances for Juve, winning the Serie A title in each of his seven seasons at the club. He was named captain of Switzerland in 2016 and has earned 99 caps for his country.
He is new Arsenal manager Unai Emery's first signing since taking over from Arsene Wenger last month.
Scott confirms place in US Open field
LOS ANGELES • Former world No. 1 golfer Adam Scott booked his US Open berth in sectional qualifying on Monday and will extend his streak of consecutive Majors played to 68 at Shinnecock Hills next week.
His six-under total of 138 was just enough for him to avoid a 10-man play-off for the final spot. Scott has played in every Major since the 2001 British Open. But, after slipping out of the top 60 in the world rankings he did not have an automatic berth in the year's second Major.
Belgian police arrest 13 to probe tennis fixing
BRUSSELS • Belgian police held 13 people in an investigation into match-fixing in tennis yesterday, prosecutors said.
The swoop was part of an international probe into an Armenian-Belgian criminal network suspected of bribing players to throw games.
Prosecutors said matches were on the low-level Futures and Challenger circuits, away from the gaze of television coverage, and where the prize money was low enough for players to be susceptible.
