IA down CSC to take Div 1 cricket title

Singapore Indian Association (IA) won the Singapore Cricket Association's Division One League when they beat Ceylon Sports Club (CSC) by 10 wickets in the final.

In a rain-affected match yesterday, CSC were bowled out for 113 in 21.5 overs with Ananthakrishna taking 4-9. IA then hit 118-0 in 17.2 overs with Surendran Chandramohan (59) and Chaminda Ruwan (56) unbeaten.

Werder coach sacked after three losses

BERLIN • German football club Werder Bremen have sacked coach Viktor Skripnik, after the club was left last in the Bundesliga table following their third straight loss on Saturday.

Werder were beaten 4-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach, with the 46-year-old Ukrainian leaving after almost two years. Under-23 coach Alexander Nouri will take over in the interim.

McHale secures maiden title in Japan

TOKYO • American Christina McHale beat Katerina Siniakova in the Japan Women's Open for her first career WTA title.

The seventh seed scored a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over the unseeded Czech in the rain-disrupted final at Ariake Tennis Forest Park.
