Ho, Toh lead field with matching 70s

•National golfers Joshua Ho and Lucius Toh fired matching scores of two-under 70 yesterday in the first round of the Singapore National Amateur Championship, with Charles Alliston a stroke behind at the Tanah Merah Country Club's Tampines Course.

After today's second round, the top-16 players will progress into the match-play segment with the winner earning a spot in next year's Singapore Open.

In the women's division, Amelia Yong carded a 70 and leads Joey Poh by two shots.

Albirex maul Tigers to make S'pore Cup semis

•Albirex Niigata are through to the Singapore Cup semi-finals after a 5-1 aggregate win over Balestier Khalsa.

The Japanese side beat fellow S-League club Balestier 4-1 in the return leg of their quarter-final clash at Toa Payoh Stadium last night, courtesy of goals from Atsushi Kawata, Rion Taki, Shun Inaba and Rui Kumada.

Doping suspects out of world championships

MOSCOW • Russian athletes suspected of doping will be barred from competing at next week's world championships in Beijing next week, said Sergei Butov, secretary general of the Russian Athletics Federation.

Recent accusations of mass doping worldwide made by German broadcaster ARD and Britain's Sunday Times newspaper have plunged athletics into a new crisis marring the build-up to Beijing.

S'pore Airlines to hold F1 carnival this weekend

Singapore Airlines will be holding a two-day "Light Up The Night" carnival, a lead-up event to next month's Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, at the F1 Pit Building this weekend from 1-9pm.

Fans can look forward to stunt displays and try their hand at changing an F1 race car tyre. There is also the SIA Paper Plane Challenge, where participants compete with their paper planes for distance and speed.
