Hangzhou to host 2022 Asian Games

ASHGABAT (Turkmenistan) • The city of Hangzhou was yesterday awarded the 2022 Asian Games, marking another win for China's global sporting ambitions.

The city in eastern China was the only candidate, making it a shoo-in for selection by the Olympic Council of Asia at its congress in Ashgabat.

The award comes shortly after Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, having hosted the Summer Games in 2008. It means China will host two major multi-sport events in the same year.

LAUSANNE • The final candidates for the 2024 Olympics are Budapest, Hamburg, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said there were five "outstanding cities" in the race for the Games, which will be decided in 2017.


Gerrard seeks advice on 'racist' allegation

LONDON • Steven Gerrard is seeking legal advice after El Hadji Diouf, his former Liverpool team-mate, allegedly claimed that he is a racist.

The former Senegal forward is reported to have responded to comments in Gerrard's new book, in which he labelled Diouf "top of the list of Liverpool signings I liked the least".

Diouf is alleged to have said that Gerrard, "never liked black people", adding: "We all saw how he made life difficult for Mario Balotelli in Liverpool... Liverpool are not a team that welcomes black(s) unless they are British."


Palmer reprimanded, will compete at Rio

SYDNEY • Australian Olympic relay gold medallist Kylie Palmer has been reprimanded for a 2013 doping violation but can compete at Rio next year.

Fina had initially cleared the swimmer in 2013 after "low levels of a prohibited substance" found in her in-competition sample at the Barcelona World Championships did not show up in other tests conducted around the same time.
