Female football fans' fleeting hopes dashed

TEHERAN • For a brief moment, Iran's female football fans thought they were finally allowed to attend a match, in this case Iran's World Cup qualifier against Syria in Teheran's Azadi Stadium today.But their hopes were dashed yesterday when the authorities said their tickets were sold by mistake.

Iranian women have been barred from football games since the 1979 Islamic revolution, because of what officials deem as a "vulgar atmosphere".


Spanish league wants Man City probed as well

MADRID • The Spanish football league (LFP) has asked for Manchester City to be investigated under Financial Fair Play rules and backed Uefa's decision to look into Paris Saint-Germain's huge recent spending spree.

The LFP called for European football's ruling body to look into the two clubs' finances after they each splashed out more than £200 million (S$351.5 million) in the last transfer window.
