Eriksson sacked by 2nd-tier Chinese side

SHANGHAI • Former England national football coach Sven-Goran Eriksson was shown the door at China's second-tier Shenzhen FC yesterday after a run of poor results.

The 69-year-old leaves with the team fourth in China League One after 13 games. He joined Shenzhen in December after leaving Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

Pliskova to skip Birmingham warm-up

PRAGUE • Tennis world No. 3 Karolina Pliskova said yesterday that she will miss the WTA Wimbledon warm-up event in Birmingham starting this Saturday due to an elbow injury.

Pliskova will still take part in the June 25-July 1 Eastbourne tournament.

July 7 is D-Day for axing of Super Rugby sides

CAPE TOWN • South African Rugby has set July 7 as the date when they decide which two of its teams will be dropped from Super Rugby for next season.

The number of South Africa sides will be cut from six to four as the tournament is reduced from 18 teams to 15. The Cheetahs and Southern Kings are expected to be the teams axed.
