Brazil graft probe leads to raid on Olympic boss

RIO DE JANEIRO • Brazil's federal police yesterday raided the home of Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the national Olympic committee's president, as part of a probe into suspected international vote-buying that secured Rio de Janeiro hosting rights to the 2016 Games.

The police conducted search and seizure operations as part of the investigation which started nine months ago in cooperation with French authorities.


Bartomeu says Messi deal inked, but by dad

BARCELONA • Barca's under-fire president Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed that a four-year extension for Lionel Messi has been signed by the player's agent and father, Jorge Horacio Messi.

Barca announced an agreement with Messi in July, but the star is yet to put pen to paper.


Reds defender Clyne out for a few months

LONDON • England defender Nathaniel Clyne has been ruled out for a "significant period of time" owing to a back injury, Liverpool football club manager Jurgen Klopp said yesterday. The 26-year-old, who made 41 appearances last season, was not named in the Reds' Champions League squad for their group stage games which run till Dec 6.


Juve's Agnelli to chair football association

GENEVA • Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has been appointed the new head of the powerful European Club Association (ECA).

The ECA, whose 200-plus members include all the continent's biggest and richest football clubs, said both Agnelli and Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis were chosen as its representatives on the executive committee of European body Uefa.
