Atletico make triple swoop in French base
ISTRIA • Atletico Madrid made a triple swoop at France's World Cup training base on Monday, announcing new contracts for talismanic striker Antoine Griezmann and defender Lucas Hernandez, as well as officially signing midfielder Thomas Lemar from Monaco.
The LaLiga football club said in a statement that all three contracts were signed in the presence of Atletico's chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who had travelled to the France team's base in the Russian town of Istria.
Griezmann, who publicly rejected a move to Barcelona, is believed to have extended his contract to 2023, while Hernandez will stay till 2024. Lemar's move is subject to his passing a medical test and Atletico's preliminary deal with Monaco being formalised.
Arsenal closing in on Bayer goalie Leno
LONDON • English Premier League football club Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno on a five-year deal, according to British media reports.
The German international is likely to be new manager Unai Emery's second acquisition, after Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner joined on a free transfer from Juventus earlier this month.
Cleveland keen on San Antonio's Leonard
NEW YORK • The Cleveland Cavaliers have contacted the San Antonio Spurs to inquire about small forward Kawhi Leonard's availability via a trade, according to Cleveland.com.
An ESPN report said Leonard, who has said he wants to leave the Spurs in reports last week, has his eye on playing in Los Angeles, preferably for the Lakers. It added that the Boston Celtics are also expected to be a major suitor for the National Basketball Association 2014 Finals MVP.
