Arsenal keen on Turan as Ozil, Sanchez may leave

LONDON • Arsenal are planning a £25 million (S$43.7 million) summer bid for Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan, as they step up plans to reinforce Arsene Wenger's squad before the probable departures of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

The Arsenal manager said there would be no further talks with Ozil or Sanchez until the end of the season, when both will have only 12 months left on their contracts.


Bouchard knocked out in opener once more

MIAMI • Eugenie Bouchard's poor form continued on Wednesday, as the Canadian suffered a first-round exit at the hands of Australia's Ashleigh Barty at the Miami Open.

The wild card's 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win sets up an all-Australian clash in the second round of the WTA hard-court event against 14th seed Samantha Stosur. But for Bouchard, a former world No. 5 now 56th in the rankings, it was another blow after her first-round exit in Indian Wells.


Lopez & Ibaka banned, docked pay for fighting

NEW YORK • Chicago Bulls centre Robin Lopez and Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka were each suspended one game without pay by the National Basketball Association on Wednesday, for exchanging punches during an altercation.

Ibaka and Lopez were given technical fouls and ejected in Toronto's 122-120 overtime victory over visiting Chicago on Tuesday.


Simeone wanted to leave after Real's win in final

BARCELONA • Diego Simeone revealed in an interview with Spanish sports daily AS published yesterday that he considered quitting Atletico Madrid last summer following defeat by city rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League final, and turned down a €35 million (S$53 million) offer from another club, presumably Paris St-Germain, to leave.
