Amir Czech-mates Jartim for fifth win

Singapore's mixed martial arts fighter Amir Khan earned his fifth consecutive victory last night at One Championship's inaugural Shanghai event.

The 22-year-old lightweight beat Jaroslav Jartim of the Czech Republic via a technical knockout after 3min 46sec in the first round.


Injured van Persie out of Bulgaria match

AMSTERDAM • Netherlands striker Robin van Persie has been ruled out of the crucial World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in Amsterdam tomorrow due to a knee injury, the Dutch football federation said on Friday.
Van Persie came on as a substitute in the second half of the 4-0 thrashing by leaders France in Paris in the Group A qualifier on Thursday. It was the 34-year-old's first game for his country in almost two years.

Surgery over, Rossi vows fast return

MILAN • Italian motorcycling star Valentino Rossi vowed to get back on his bike as quickly as possible as he was discharged from hospital yesterday following surgery on a broken leg.

The nine-time world champion in all categories was operated on in Ancona, eastern Italy, on Friday after breaking his right leg in a training crash near his home town of Urbino. Doctors had estimated that the 38-year-old would need to remain in hospital for up to four days after surgery but he was discharged after just one night.
