Albirex Niigata are on the verge of retaining their S-League football title after thrashing Balestier Khalsa 3-0 last night at Toa Payoh Stadium, with goals by Tsubasa Sano, Hiroyoshi Kamata and Ryota Nakai.

They have 56 points from 22 games and are set to take the crown even if they lose both remaining games and Tampines Rovers (47) win all three, as they have a superior goal difference of +25.

Good showing in bodybuilding event

Three of Singapore's team of seven returned from the prestigious Olympia Amateur Asia in Hong Kong with top-three placings.

Gisele Lim clinched gold in bodyfitness (over 1.63m), Alexandra Peak-Watkinson won silver in the same event, while Nur Nadiah Ahmad Jani took bronze in bikini fitness (up to 1.58m).

Tyen Fong, Benjamin Broughton and Sam Enaya were fourth, fifth and sixth in their respective categories.

Ko in opening-round lead with 7 birdies

KUALA LUMPUR • Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko posted a seven-under 64 yesterday to take the lead in the first round of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament, with defending champion Feng Shanshan trailing by two shots in joint third.

The former world No. 1, who is chasing her first LPGA victory in 15 months, got a head start with one of her best rounds of the year that included seven birdies.

Australia's Oh Su Hyun is one shot behind Ko.


Lee sent packing in French Open 1st round

KUALA LUMPUR • Malaysian badminton ace Lee Chong Wei, who has been in poor form lately, suffered another major blow after losing in the opening round of the French Open Super Series badminton tournament in Paris on Wednesday.

The seventh seed was beaten by unheralded Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 21-14, 21-15 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin.
