S'pore youth bowlers get gold and bronze

Singapore's youth bowlers performed well at the 17th Kaohsiung International with 16-year-old Xavier Teo and Jomond Chia, 17, finishing first and third respectively.

Teo overcame a slow start to clinch the title with 1,624 pinfalls, with Chia not far behind on 1,580. Liao Li-yang from Chinese Taipei earning silver.

Xavier takes home the top prize of NT$30,000 (S$862), with Jomond pocketing NT$10,000.


Enn makes s-finals with PB, both men out

Sprinter Wendy Enn became the second Singaporean woman to go under 12 seconds for the 100m, setting a personal-best 11.98sec yesterday in the 100m heats on Day One of the Asian Athletics Championships in Odisha, India to enter the semi-finals.

Shanti Pereira holds the national record of 11.80.

Calvin Kang just missed the semi-finals with his 10.68 in the men's event, while Timothee Yap was disqualified.


Leicester sign Iborra from Sevilla for $19m

LONDON • Leicester have signed Vicente Iborra from Sevilla in a four-year deal with the fee reportedly worth £10.5 million (S$18.8 million).

The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder is the Premier League football club's second signing of the summer, following the addition of English defender Harry Maguire from Hull last month.

Arsenal to host EPL's first Friday night start

LONDON • The new English Premier League football season will kick off on a Friday night for the first time, with Arsenal playing Leicester at the Emirates Stadium on Aug 11.

The league announced the change to the schedule, which was driven by the TV companies, yesterday.

Russia wants dopers to return their medals

MOSCOW • Russia's athletics federation has urged athletes who were disqualified from the Beijing and London Olympics for doping to return their medals to the International Olympic Committee.

The federation, which has publicly called on athletes to return their medals at least twice in the past, said their failure to do so could compromise its efforts to regain membership in the International Association of Athletics Federations.
