Great showing by young local paddlers
Singapore's youth paddlers won 11 out of 13 titles on offer at the 24th South East Asian Junior & Cadet Table Tennis Championships, their best performance in the annual competition, which ended yesterday in Naga City in the Philippines.
They also won three silver and 10 bronze medals. The Junior category features Under-18s, while the Cadet classes are for the U-15s.
The 24th edition featured competitors from six other countries - Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Singapore's previous best haul was 10 golds in 2016.
Hierro stepping down as Spain coach
MADRID • Fernando Hierro, who stood in as Spain coach when Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the World Cup, will not continue in the role, the Royal Spanish Football Federation said yesterday. Under the former Spain defender, who had little previous coaching experience, the 2010 winners lost on penalties to host nation Russia in the round of 16.
Cormier KOs Miocic to take heavyweight title
LONDON • Ultimate Fighting Championship's light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic in a first-round knockout to also claim the heavyweight title.
A single, crushing right hand in the clinch laid Miocic flat on his back on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, before Cormier jumped on his foe, raining blows on his bloody face until the referee jumped in at 4min 33sec of the first round.
