It was hailed as a major coup for Singapore's sporting calendar, boosting the country's international profile the way Formula One's Singapore Grand Prix and tennis' WTA Finals had done. But hosting the first three editions of the Singapore Rugby Sevens (2016-2018) has come at a price.

Rugby Singapore, a subsidiary and commercial arm of the Singapore Rugby Union (SRU), was set up to organise the tournament but chalked up debts of about $1.7 million.
