After fellow local paddler Isabelle Li suffered a disappointing loss to Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Nga in the SEA Games table tennis women's singles, Singapore's Feng Tianwei, Clarence Chew and Gao Ning all cruised through their singles matches with 3-0 victories on Wednesday afternoon at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Feng sailed smoothly through her match, thrashing Indonesia's Novita Oktariyani 11-3, 11-1, 11-5.
In the men's singles, Clarence Chew similarly cruised through with a 11-3, 11-3, 11-5 win over Cambodia's Saravey Nay.
Gao beat Gilang Maulana 11-9, 11-4, 11-9 but faced stiff resistance from the Indonesian. And the Republic's top men's player was not satisfied with his own performance too.
He said: "I am still a little nervous and slow, allowing my faster opponent to push me to a corner. With the competitions increasing in importance, I am aiming to get faster."
The mixed doubles semi-finals and finals will be played on Wednesday evening at 5.30pm and 8.00pm respectively at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
