Singapore's badminton team opened their SEA Games campaign on a disastrous note yesterday.

The nation's top male and female shuttlers Derek Wong and Gu Juan crashed out in the opening rounds of the badminton singles tournament at the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Gu lost to Indonesia's Manuputty Bellaetrix 13-21, 17-21, while Wong lost to Thailand's second seed Thanongsak Saesomboonsuk 9-21, 21-13, 17-21.

The mixed doubles duo of Vanessa Neo and Danny Bawa Chrisnanta, as well as the women's doubles duo of Neo and Fu Mingtian, also crashed out in their opening matches.

Only Chen Jiayuan in the women's singles and Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei in the women's doubles are left in the competition.
