It was a nail-biting finish for the Yishun Junior College (YJC) girls and Raffles Institution (RI) boys in the Schools National A Division Floorball finals, as both schools recorded 3-2 wins to clinch their titles at Bedok Sports Hall.

YJC pulled off an upset victory over defending champions Meridian Junior College (MJC) for their first title, while RI edged out last year's bronze medallists Anglo-Chinese Junior College to retake the trophy they last won in 2008

Amirul Afiq made the difference for RI, as he scored from long range with two minutes left in the final period to give his school the advantage.

It was not an unfamiliar situation for the 17-year-old centre, as he pulled off a similar shot in the semi-finals against MJC with seven seconds to go to bring the match to penalties.

"Our coach always does mental preparation with us before and after trainings, to get our mental strength up, and that really helped us today," said Amirul, adding that his team's perserverance was key to their victory.

YJC coach Ngasti W.Z. felt that it was sweet victory for his girls, who had fallen to MJC 9-4 in last year's finals.

He said: "Last year, maybe they weren't as composed and let in some early goals. But this time around, we scored the goal first, and they kept their composure."
