SINGAPORE - Two national meet records in the A Division were set at the 57th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships on Monday.
On the penultimate day of the competition, Victoria Junior College's (VJC) Vanessa Lee clocked 7min 38.16sec to lower the A Div girls' 2,000m steeplechase record.
The 18-year-old finished ahead of schoolmate Nicole Low (7:56.82) and Raffles Institution (RI) Faye Chiang (8:25.16) at the Bishan Stadium.
The previous mark of 8:00.94 was set by Vanessa last year.
In the A Div boys 400m hurdles final, Hwa Chong Institution's Ow Yeong Wei Bin took gold in a time of 54.19s - beating the previous meet record of 54.56s set by his older brother Yu Xiang in 2013.
Wei Bin, 18, finished comfortably ahead of VJC's Jared Chang (58.27s) and St Andrew's Junior College's Luke Chiang (58.87).
In the other events, Singapore Sports School (SSP) Jezebel Koh won the B Div girls' high jump with a 1.52m leap to beat Cedar Girls' Secondary School's Yi Yichen (1.50m) while SSP schoolmate Cherlin Sia, who also managed 1.50m, was third on countback.
Commonwealth Secondary School's Fang Yiyang won the B Div boys' 2,000m steeplechase B Div Boys in a time of 06:43.20, ahead of St Joseph's Institution's Dave Tung (6:48.06) and Ruben Loganathan (6:48.39) of Guangyang Secondary School.
RI's Matz Chan won the C Div boys' 400m hurdles in 59.48s, beating schoolmate Jered Wong (1:03.40) and National Junior College's Muhammad Irfan (1:03.65).
The final day of the championships is on Friday at the National Stadium with events like the 100m, 800m and 4x100 relays scheduled.
This will coincide with the 11-day block of athletics events held at the 55,000-seater stadium.
Besides the April 28-29 Singapore Open and final day of the School's Championships, there will be the ActiveSG Athletics Fiesta from April 30-May 1 followed by the May 4-8 Asia Masters Athletics Championships.
