School Sports: Raffles Institution claims squash crown from Hwa Chong Institution

Raffles Institution (RI) won the Schools National A Division girls' squash title at the Kallang Squash and Tennis Centre on Monday, beating defending champions Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 4-1 in the final.

HCI drew first blood with a victory in the first match, with Clara Ng beating RI's Clara Tan, but Raffles captain Denise Lim won the second match to set the comeback in motion. RI then claimed the remaining three matches through Chong Yin Jean, Michelle Tay and Cheryl Wong.

It was a sweet victory for Raffles. having lost to the HCI 3-2 in last year's final. Coach Allan Chang said: "We were the underdogs today since Hwa Chong were the defending champions. But the girls trained really hard, so they deserved it."

HCI captain Samantha Phey congratulated RI for their victory, saying: "They had more depth and were more formidable, but we will fight hard to take back the title next year."

National Junior College defeated Anglo-Chinese Junior College 3-2 to claim third place.
