School Sports: New records set in B Div discus and A Div 3,000m walk

SINGAPORE - Two meet records fell on the sixth day of the Schools National Track and Field Championships on Monday at the Bukit Gombak stadium.

Eric Yee of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) set a new record in the B Division Discus final, beating his own record of 48.79m that he had set at last year's meet. His throw of 50.28m saw him beat out Singapore Sports School's (SSP) Jun Jie and Raffles Institution's (RI) Jordan Chia who finished second and third respectively.

Victoria Junior College's (VJC) Wu Aiwei then broke the Girls' A Division 3,000m walk record, smashing the national record by more than 35 seconds after she clocked in a timing of 17min 15.12sec. The previous record of 17:53.37 was set by HCI's Tin Shu Min in 2013.

Speaking to The Straits Times after her victory, the 19-year-old revealed that the win was unexpected. She said: "I think the result is quite surprising for myself and the team, considering I only started training since October last year. I joined to simply keep fit, but the coach saw that I had potential (in the walking event) so I ended up walking competitively."
