There is something haunting about writing about someone you have never met and never saw play except through TV. Yet hour by hour, day after day this week, we have been caught in a depressing, almost voyeuristic disaster, listening to bulletins that had nothing to tell us.

No sight nor sound of Emiliano Sala, the Argentinian striker who made the biggest move of his life by signing for Cardiff City last weekend. No word, either, of Dave Ibbotson, the English pilot of the single-engine Piper PA-46 Malibu plane taking him from his former club FC Nantes to Cardiff.
