SINGAPORE - After skipping last year's edition, six-time Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens (SCC 7s) champions Daveta are keen to reclaim their crown at the 69th edition of the tournament this weekend.

The Fijian club are supported by several members of the country's Olympic gold medal-winning team, including Jerry Tuwai and Jasa Veremalua, and will start as overwhelming favourites among the 16 teams to lift the Ablitt Cup at the Padang.

Tuwai said on Thursday (Nov 3): "Our objective as always is to win the tournament and also develop some new players. The SCC 7s always attracts a quality field and we will not be taking any team for granted. The beauty of 7s is that any team can win on the day. Our main strategy is to focus on our own game."

Among the biggest threats will be 2010 champions Penguins International RFC, who have former All Black Sonsene Anesi in their squad.

Speaking on the sidelines of Thursday's press conference at the Padang, Penguins captain Gareth Bautz noted that the Fijians might be clear favourites but the British club, runner-up in 2015, are also desperate for the silverware.

He added: "The Fijians are world-class but maybe they'll be a bit over-confident and that would work to our advantage."

The Nov 4-6 tournament will also feature the schools and colleges competition, ranging from Under-14 to Under-18 divisions.

Tickets are available at apactix.com and start from $10.
