SINGAPORE - Pre-tournament favourites Daveta suffered a shock exit from the Ablitt Cup competition at the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby Sevens (SCC 7s) on Saturday (Nov 5).
The Fijian outfit was upset 7-5 by England Academy in the quarter-final of the competition. The loss was the second defeat of the day, as they had earlier lost 12-29 to Sunnybank of Australia in their final pool match.
Daveta will, however, contest the Shield semi-final when they take on Malaysian side Iskandar Raiders on Sunday at the Padang.
Daveta boast Jerry Tuwai, who was part of his country's Olympic gold medal-winning team, and they were aiming to lift the Ablitt Cup for a record seventh time. They last won the competition in 2012.
The Singapore's mens rugby sevens team lost 7-33 to Australian side Palmyra Rugby Union Club and were beaten by Tamariva Rugby Football Club of Japan 21-12 in the pool rounds. They will be up against the Froggies Sevens Rugby Club in the plate competition.
