Remote-controlled car to assist in athletics competition

For the first time in SEA Games history, a remote-controlled car will be used during athletics events to shuttle javelins, discuses, and hammers from the field of play and return them to the start line.

The All-New Volvo XC90 Remote Controlled (RC) Car, is a one-fifth scaled version of its full-sized version, the All-New Volvo XC90 which will be launched in Singapore late July.

During the athletics competition, an official will manually lock the track implement onto the tiny car, while another athletics volunteer navigates its path via remote control from up to 500m away.

Weighing 15kg, the little Volvo is one of four such customised vehicles in the world. All four have been shipped to Singapore, after taking two months to produce and $15,000 to make.

While it is mainly being introduced for entertainment purposes, the miniature is also expected to create a safer playing environment and boost efficiency.
