When Pele was taken to hospital in Paris this week, messages of affection from around the world testified to his place as arguably the greatest player of his game.

Not arguably. Even Lionel Messi, maybe even Cristiano Ronaldo, would acknowledge that Pele's three World Cup wins (in 1958, 1962 and 1970) is an incomparable legacy.
